The performance takes place in a corner where two walls meet. The performer wears a white shirt that is fixed to the wall by means of a zipper. The performer’s body enters into a state of tension with the architecture as she slowly works her way out of the garment. The fabric stretches, yields, and remains behind. Movement and spatial constraint determine the course of the action. What becomes visible is a transitional state: between holding on and letting go, between protection and vulnerability. The empty garment left behind marks a moment of separation—like a shedding, in which the material remains in the space as a trace of a lived condition. Created in the context of the financial crisis in the United States, the work reflects experiences of loss, confinement, and new beginnings. The body is quite literally “caught in between”—at a turning point where movement becomes possible only by shedding what weighs it down.
